Intent and purpose of the Second Amendment.
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which was ratified in 1791, states: "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
The intent and purpose of the Second Amendment have been the subject of much debate and interpretation over the years. However, most legal scholars and historians agree that the amendment was included in the Bill of Rights to protect the right of citizens to own firearms for self-defense and to maintain a "well-regulated militia."
At the time the Second Amendment was written, the United States was a new and fragile country, and many of the Founding Fathers believed that an armed citizenry was essential to maintaining freedom and preventing tyranny. They also believed that militias made up of citizens would be necessary to defend the country in case of invasion or rebellion.
