What is existentialism?
Existential theoretical orientation is a philosophical and psychological approach to understanding human existence and experience. It focuses on the individual's subjective experience of their presence rather than on external objective factors.
Existentialism asserts that human beings have ultimate responsibility for their own lives and the meaning they create in them. This orientation emphasizes the freedom of individuals to make choices and take responsibility for their actions while acknowledging the anxiety and uncertainty that this can produce.
In this orientation, existential therapy seeks to help individuals face and confront the fundamental anxieties and dilemmas of human existence, such as death, isolation, and meaninglessness. It encourages individuals to examine their values and assumptions about life and to take ownership of their choices and actions.
Existential therapy has been applied to various clinical issues, such as anxiety, depression, and addiction. It may also be used in non-clinical settings, such as coaching or organizational development, to help individuals and groups find purpose and meaning in their work and personal lives.
As a psychotherapist, I have seen several individuals go up against their existential crisis. It is a unique and beautiful process to watch and participate in.
