There are all kinds of training, books, and seminars you can attend and read that offer a multitude of techniques and strategies to improve your communication skills.

Within my psychotherapy practice, I work with many couples, children, individuals, and families. Communication is the number one skill that they ( we) all are lacking.

It’s not how they communicate with each other, but how they lack internal communication.

Being able to identify your emotions and recognize what initiated their arrival.

INTEROCEPTION

This is the word that defines the deep insight one has about the internal working of their body and their thoughts and emotions.

Knowing how certain muscles tighten or flex when your anxiety or anger kicks in is a sign that your internal communication has grown.

But first!…

Recalling situations that were emotionally intense. When did you first feel an emotion? What happened just before the rush that might have triggered it? How long did it take to come down? Where in your body did you feel the stress?

Focus on the somatic connection! Where in your body do you feel the stress? Some feel a tingling, warmth, tension, or constriction.
